The “Kiawah Sandy Loam” in the photo above is one of the most sought after soil types in the state of South Carolina—we believe it to be the finest on the East Coast. It’s texture and moisture wicking capacity make it beyond suitable for vegetable production and we are blessed to have it here on Gun Bluff Plantation. Since day one, we have only used the most forward-thinking regenerative farming practices to ensure its productivity for generations to come.
Harleston Towles has been visiting, vacationing, socializing, hunting, fishing, and exploring pristine Edisto Island since he was a young boy. When the opportunity presented itself for him to farm here it was like a “coming home”. He has always had a deep appreciation and respect for the Island and continues to do so through his sustainable farming practices. Cover crops, pollinator plots, and wildlife forage sections are all techniques used by Towles on a daily basis.
Gun Bluff is owned by the Zimmerman/Pope family and we couldn’t ask for a better set of hosts. Conrad Zimmerman placed the property in a conservation easement through the Lowcountry Open Land Trust, barring any future development to the place. After several years of sitting idle, the family wishes to see the land remain productive. Our little vegetable operation is the most gracious recipient of that task.
